Introduction
Roger A. de la Torre, M.D., FACS Chief, Division of General Surgery John A. Growden Distinguished Professorship in Surgery Director, Missouri Bariatric Services University of Missouri
Health System
Dr. Roger A. de la Torre completed his collegiate
studies with Honors from the University of Notre Dame and then went on to
graduate from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1986. He did
his Internship and Residency in General Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical
Center in Miami Beach, Florida. Upon finishing his residency in 1991,
he went into private practice where he soon became recognized for his
abilities as a laparoscopic surgeon.
Dr. de la Torre has been instrumental in training
surgeons across the country on a variety of laparoscopic operations.
Furthermore, he has been an invited speaker at hospitals and universities in
several countries in South America, Europe and Asia, where he not only
lectured on different laparoscopic procedures, but many times also performed
live telesurgeries before gatherings of distinguished surgeons. Dr. de
la Torre’s many publications range from peer reviewed journal articles to
chapters in several textbooks on surgery.
During his time in private practice, Dr. de la Torre
has also worked to develop numerous surgical devices, and he is the holder
of over 50 patents worldwide. One of these, for “Laparoscopic Access
Port for Surgical Instruments or the Hand,” has proven instrumental in
initiating a whole new field of minimally invasive surgery. His novel
approach is currently used in a variety of intra-abdominal operations,
especially different procedures of the colon, spleen, stomach and kidney.
The benefits of this “hand assisted laparoscopy” over the traditional, open
method has been directly linked to a marked increase in live kidney donors
for transplantation.
Dr. de la Torre is one of the first surgeons in the
world to have performed a Roux-en-Y divided gastric bypass laparoscopically.
He and his surgical partner, Dr. J. Stephen Scott, developed and later published an
often-cited article on their totally intra-abdominal approach to accomplish
this operation. He has participated in nearly 6,000 bariatric
procedures, and has been designated an "American
Society for Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence surgeon."
In a continuing effort to treat the growing problem of
obesity in the U.S., Dr. de la Torre co-founded Satiety, Inc.
in the year 2000, along with Dr. Scott and the world-renowned surgeon and inventor, Dr. Thomas
J. Fogarty. This company is working to deal with obesity via
endoscopic techniques. The "TOGa" system which they've developed was
selected as on of the "Top Ten Medical Innovations" for the year 2011 by a
Cleveland Clinic panel of physicians and scientists at their 2011 Medical
Innovation Summit.
